EFA Advises on Energy Efficiency in the NEM

Welcome to Energy Futures Australia

Energy Futures Australia was founded in 1996 by our Managing Director, Dr David Crossley. We are a small, highly focussed consultancy company specialising in providing analysis, advice and project management services in relation to:

sustainable energy policy and programs, including energy efficiency, demand side management, renewable energy and abatement of greenhouse gas emissions;
energy policy and planning across all energy forms, with an emphasis on climate change and greenhouse issues;
energy industry restructuring and reform across the diversity of evolving energy markets.

Since 1996, we have completed more than 50 projects and nearly 100 publications for a broad range of clients in Australia and internationally, including governments, regulators, energy companies, industry associations and NGOs.

Note: Energy Futures Australia is not involved in futures market trading. Our company name refers to future energy policy and programs rather than financial trading.

What we do

Reviewed 250 energy projects carried out under the auspices of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC).
Project managed the corporatisation of a major government-owned electricity generator in Australia.
Prepared a report on smart metering for an environmental NGO.
Directed an international R&D project for the International Energy Agency Demand Side Management Programme which investigated the use of demand side management measures to support electricity networks.
Reviewed a government-sponsored energy efficiency financing scheme in Thailand.
Developed the first edition of a Code of Practice on demand-side management for electricity distributors in New South Wales, Australia.
Prepared a report for the New South Wales electricity industry regulator on societal demand management.
Provided advice on the implementation of trading in energy efficiency certificates (‘white certificates’) as part of a greenhouse gas emissions trading scheme in New South Wales.
Managed the development of a market and technology roadmap for the Australian solar photovoltaic industry.
Provided advice on energy efficiency to the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership, an international public-private partnership.
Led teams carrying out peer reviews of energy efficiency policies in Chile and in New Zealand for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC).

Featured Project

Demand Side Management and Climate Change

Client: Four individual countries under the auspices of the International Energy Agency Demand Side Management Programme

Currently directing a multi-national project that is investigating the potential contribution to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions that can be made by demand side management (DSM) technologies and measures. The project is also examining the extent to which emissions mitigation measures can provide benefits to electricity systems and identifying opportunities for funding DSM programs with revenue from trading emission reductions. Project commenced in 2008 and to be completed in 2010.
